Chicago Match Cup Finals

U.S. Ekes Out Win from the Aussies

Navy Pier - Chicago

The team from the U.S. Virgin Islands led by Taylor Canfield came through at the end in their Tom 28 keelboat after a nail-biting final match against Keith Swinton’s Black Swan racing team from Australia .  USone was down by two in the first-to-three point series.  In the third race, the USone took an early lead, but experienced a tear in its spinnaker.  Despite this hindrance, the team managed to stay ahead to take the point.  In Race 4, The Australians made a maneuver which caused a collision and took a penalty which they did not recover from.   In the final race, Canfield and his team took an early lead and kept it.

The winning team took home $25,000.  They popped the champagne, gleefully spraying the crowd who had come to see the awards ceremony at the east end of Navy Pier.

The Chicago Match Cup was the fourth stop on the six event World Match Racing Tour 2013 a professional sailing series authorized by the International Sailing Federation.
